How Does Illegal Immigration Skew Demographics in the United States?

Illegal immigration numbers range from 5 million to 10 million adults in the United States, around 2-3% of the total population. Unfortunately, this population skews the demographics of the nation in several key areas: educational attainment rates, poverty numbers and insurance coverage.Illegal aliens finish high school and college at far lower rates than native born citizens. Illegal immigrants who did not complete a high school education drive down the official graduation rates for states like Texas. Roughly 80-90% of American citizens in Texas finished high school but far fewer illegal immigrants do. This makes the official high school graduation rate for the state of Texas closer to 60-70%. This trend continues to their American born children who are often pressed into the work force to make money. These trends combine to create an artificially low official high school graduation rate, especially in border states such as Texas and Arizona.

Needless to say, this also depresses the statistics on those who earn college diplomas and professional certifications. Illegal aliens are disproportionately poor and inflate poverty numbers. They tend to have larger families despite lower average household incomes. Illegal aliens are also more likely to work off the books, working for less than minimum wage or below the standard wage for a job position. This drives down the wages in the sectors where they work, leading many who are working in areas like construction to fall into poverty as their wages fall. When illegal aliens hold jobs, they tend to be low skilled positions such as child care, agriculture, construction and yard work. The high unemployment rate for black men has been partially traced to the influx of illegal immigrants competing for the same low skill jobs and often winning because they work for less money and often harder because they do not have the fall back of unemployment insurance. Illegal immigrants therefore inflate the official number of people in poverty and contribute to the unemployment of citizens who are also left in poverty.Illegal aliens rarely have health insurance outside of government assistance programs, such as pregnant women who qualify for Medicaid to provide prenatal care for their soon to be American unborn children and those overstaying an HB-1 visa but still receiving insurance through an employer. Obamacare was passed to provide coverage for the roughly 46 million Americans lacking health insurance. It was estimated by the Wall Street Journal in 2009 that about 6 million of the uninsured were illegal immigrants. Using these numbers, about 13% of the uninsured are illegal immigrants. Their American born children also contribute to this figure. It would be a travesty to see mandatory health insurance remain law when a large proportion of those intended to be covered by the law are not in the country legally, and yet Obamacare does not force illegal aliens to either pay for care or pay a fine for not carrying government approved health insurance.
