Patrolling the Mexican Border

In the modern era of globalization and dissolution of trade barriers, it makes little sense to patrol the Mexican border in an effort to stop illegal immigrants from crossing into the United States. Not only is this practice an affront to the very core beliefs of freedom and the spirit of America, but it is also fraught with a great number of problems that makes such border patrol policy an uphill and losing battle.

By committing the currently great number of officers to border patrol duties with a focus on stopping illegal immigration, the United States is really wasting its efforts. Illegal immigrants have been outwitting and eluding our border patrol forces for decades now, and it seems that no reasonable measures will ever prevent them from crossing into our country. Yet we still continue to spend millions each year ‘tightening border security’ and not making any progress.

Consider that perhaps if we do manage to halt illegal immigration that this will probably not be a good thing. A number of illegal immigrants fulfill important job functions in America, and are a very important part of our industry. If border control really were as efficient as our government aims, then it is likely that American industry will suffer greatly as a result. Rather, instead of taking great pains to prevent immigration, perhaps the government should consider relaxing immigration requirements and cutting illegal alien hunting programs in order to focus on the much more frightening problem of drug trafficking along the border.
