Requirements to Get US Citizenship

Each year there are thousands of people from around the world who want to become US citizens. You need to meet the following criteria to be eligible to apply for citizenship in the US:

By birth:

Persons born within the United States or its territories are automatically granted citizenship. The required criteria to fall within this ambit are set out in US Citizenship and Immigration Services.

If a child is born outside the United States or its territories to parents who are citizens of the United States they are eligible for American citizenship. These births should be immediately reported to the nearest US consulate or embassy.

Getting citizenship later in life:

There are several paths available for persons born outside the United States to gain citizenship. The basic requirements are that the applicant should be over eighteen years old, should have held a green card and been resident in the US for at least five years, should support the ideals of the US constitution, should be able to speak, read and understand English.

A person meeting the required criteria can make an application and follow the procedures including interviews and upon the completion of such requirements citizenship will be granted.
